Review of Wrong Turn 6: Last Resort (2014) by Martin R — 22 Dec 2014
For a movie with five sequels, it's a damn shame that only the first two--specifically the second one--are the only ones worth checking out. The rehash formula of hillbillies huntin' their prey would be more interesting if the kills got more creative with each film, like, say.
.."Hatchet." I mean, for a movie that's unrated, there sure is a LOT of censorship to the violence. But I'll give the filmmakers props for the fire hose kill, that was probably THE sole highlight of the entire flick.
The sad part is that the "hotel in the woods" location definitely had potential to provide the movie with rich visuals or some good tension. There's a nice jump-scare at the hotel's hot spring where one of the characters sees a hillbilly, having had seen him earlier in the woods.
I just wish they had built off that style--it's not original, but it's different, and that's fine enough by me. Horror films of this sort can have a lot of a cheese; the less dairy, the better.
However, somebody let the milk go sour because this cheddar really does reek. Whatever happened to the hints of toxic industrial contamination, I mean, if the characters are going to stay the same, why not keep a consistent backstory? Especially since, oh.
...I don't know, you can build off a toxic spill at the ol' mill. It's not exactly fresh, but it could be used to explain some things. Nope, Wrong Turn has no desire to provide any sort of finale to the series.
This is a franchise that has no plans or desire for any sort of closure for the near future. These movies will continue to be churned out and I wouldn't mind, but if that marketed "UNRATED" sign is going to get me a bit of blood and a shaky style of Hollywood death blows, I will gladly spend $20 on something GOOD vs the near-two dollars that it cost to rent this Wrong Turn.
