Review of Written on the Wind (1956) by Maya C — 12 Jun 2007
Anyone who utters the word "melodrama" with a hint of scorn or condescension has not been exposed to the films of Douglas Sirk. This is just a brilliant and beautiful film, where great performances, a lushly tumescent score and cinematography conceal Sirk's fierce satire and sly wit.
It works on a number of levels, and is quite moving in spite of (or maybe because of) the proto-Aaron Spelling soap excess. Loved this film!
