Review of Wristcutters: A Love Story (2007) by Brian H — 17 Feb 2009
This is an incredibly original and fresh movie. Once I figured out the concept (which didn't take too long), I was very eager to see where it would take me. Once Tom Waits showed up, the movie did get a little weird and sort of took a very strange turn.
I think the film lost a bit of its charm in the final third. But overall, I found it extremely clever and I was sucked into this absurd, dark, but somehow romantic world. Although I can't really compare it to any movie because of it's uniqueness, it at times reminded me of Defending Your Life, at other times Everything is Illuminated, and at other times Big Fish.
If that's not a strange combo, I don't know what is. But the film is completely entertaining and fascinating. Anybody who likes something different and clever and really out of the ordinary should come to this with an open mind and you probably won't be disappointed.
