Review of Wreck-It Ralph (2012) by Steven I — 25 Oct 2013
Easily my favorite animated film since 2010 when How To Train Your Dragon and Toy Story 3 came out. It's rare something has both great quality and great nostalgia to it. Wreck-It Ralph takes the lesson of "be happy with who you are" and approaches it in a fresh way.
In most movies like this, the protagonist has a moment where he/she sorta becomes a jerk for a moment, seemingly only because the movie needs to move forward. In Wreck-It Ralph, that moment that would otherwise be cliche, becomes heart-felt and original, because Ralph really feels like he's, reluctantly, doing the right thing.
Wreck-It Ralph is visually awe-inducing at moments (such as Hero's Duty), and makes you both marvel at the sweets-themed Sugar Rush game but also crave more video game settings that could've been implemented.
The characters are memorable. And the movie never relies TOO much on nostalgia to sell it. Instead, the nostalgia is just an added bonus for older audiences. Wreck-It Ralph is sure to entertain not only kids, but adults both young and older quick enough to spot the references.
