Review of Wreck-It Ralph (2012) by Bradley W — 15 Nov 2014
Wreck-It Ralph is not only the best animated movie to come out this year, but it's a heartwarming adventure movie that really is for true video gamers. I love video games, and I have played all the classics like Super Mario, Pac-Man, Sonic the Hedgehog, and even newer games like Call of Duty or Halo, and they all add up to what makes this new film so fantastic. It takes the world of arcade games and shows us the view of the bad guy, who may not be so bad after all. The creators of the game really know what makes Disney Animation the best in the business, because just like a Pixar film, they are able to touch the core in the kid in us and able to give even an adult like me a great time. My only complaint about this film is that although they have many video game characters and worlds, we mostly spend time in a game called Sugar Rush. It's a candy world with a lot of characters that reminds me of Strawberry Shortcake or something, and I just felt like the movie could've explored a lot more games than a candy world. But this is not a big problem, because the movie itself is a great and wonderful time for all ages, and I think this is without a doubt the best video game movie ever made. I loved the story and animation, but the characters are what make Wreck-It Ralph so incredible. I honestly loved every character in the film, even Vanellope von Schweetz who I thought I was going to hate. This movie has a lot of heart and a lot of fun, and you need to see to see it right away.
The story follows a video game bad guy named Ralph, who wishes to be a good guy. He has been a bad guy for 30 years in an arcade game named Fix-It Felix Jr., and all he wants is to prove that he can be good guy if he tried. He decides to try and become a good guy by jumping into another video game, and soon he is sent into a racing game called Sugar Rush where he meets Vanellope von Schweetz, a glitch in the game that dreams of being a great racer. He decides to help her to earn a medal and prove he's a good guy, but in fact being in that game may prove to be dangerous and get both Fix-It Felix Jr. and Sugar Rush to be unplugged forever.
The plot of the movie is not only funny and interesting, but it also is a movie that shows us that we should not change who we are. I felt real sympathy for Ralph because he really has nothing going for him and the only one who even attempts to be kind to him is Felix, and so I kind of wanted him to prove to everyone that he is a good person. Ralph may be called a bad guy, but he is a good hearted guy and we instantly like him because we can tell all he wants is to be accepted and loved. The movie really has some touching moments where we feel some emotion towards the characters, and even some moments where it gets really dark and intense. I felt really connected to the story and this movie will never have you bored because you will be constantly interested in what is going and how fun the movie is. This movie shows you only about three different game worlds and the majority of it are based in Sugar Rush and I felt like they could've shown much more if it wanted to. But for what I was given, I was happy because I felt like the filmmakers and writers truly knew how to cut to the core of the audience and give them both a fun and emotionally satisfying film. This is a great animated film, and I haven't seen one of those in a long time.
The voice cast is what gives the characters so many dimensions, and I can honestly say that I was impressed at how perfect they picked the voice actors. John C. Reilly was a great choice for this as soon as I heard him in the trailer, I mean the character just acts and looks perfect for him and he has that deep voice and lovable attitude that makes Ralph so fun. I am a fan of Reilly, and I was glad to see him in another ole that is just perfect for him. Sarah Silverman has a fun voice for this character, and I think she purposely tried to make it annoying because that is what makes Vanellope so fun, that she is also adorable and annoying at the same time. Jack McBrayer has that quirky and memorable voice that makes him so fun, and he makes a character like Felix both a dorky and lovable guy. Jane Lynch was brilliant for this tough role, because she has that same mean and cruel voice that makes her character so tough. You will remember the voices from this movie, and that itself is an achievement.
Wreck-It Ralph was a great idea from the start, I mean as soon as I heard about it I could tell it was going to be something special. Never before have video games been put into a film so well, I mean how often do we get to see bad guys like Bowser, Doctor Eggman, or even those ghosts from Pac-Man all in the same room and making us laugh until it hurts. I think one of the main reasons I loved the films so much is because I consider myself a gamer because I have played video games like the ones in this movie all my life, so all the jokes they make about video games made complete sense to me and I think most kids won't understand how smart the movie is like most gamer will. You will love this movie even if you don't play video games, but this movie is dedicated to gamers who grew up with arcade games like this. Honestly I kind of wish a game like Fix-It Felix Jr. did exist so that I could play it, because this movie really gets you in the mood to play some video games. The animation perfectly captures all the video game characters but I think the worlds are what really stand out, because they really make you feel like you are actually in a video game. The true point of this film though is to show us that we should never try to change who we are meant to be, and we should enjoy the lives we are given every day. Wreck-It Ralph is a movie that you will remember for a long time, and a movie that will touch the hearts of both the young and old alike.
