Review of Would You Rather (2013) by David L — 25 Jan 2015
It feels like this concept has been done so many times, but if it's done well like this, then it's well worth the watch. Ultimately it's a winner takes all torture porn fest whereby the cast are whittled down one by one until we have our victor.
In this instance, it's a group of strangers who's only connection is that each of them has a debt or need that they cannot afford by themselves. Seduced by the mysterious hosts invite to play a game in order to have their debt paid, they attend a dinner party like no other, which is a feast of horror entertainment.
A simple game of would you rather endures with four rounds, each of which gets more brutal the deeper we continue to play. As the contestants are bound to see the game through once they agree to begin round one, anyone wanting to leave will pay the ultimate price of death (which believe it or not may be a better way out than some of the later options).
It has a very Saw like feel, especially Saw 2 in the sense that there are a group of individuals whom the host knows intimate details about, each having to undergo personal decisions which will ultimately effect whether they, and several others, live or die.
Despite there being horrid and gruesome references to gore, you do not visually see a lot of what goes on but the thought is torrid enough. I enjoyed the twist at the end and didn't see it coming, possibly because I was too busy re-thinking the brutal scenes Id just witnessed.
It is one I think I'd watch again despite knowing the outcome, and I would highly recommend it to any fan of the horror genre.
