Review of World's Greatest Dad (2009) by Grant L — 10 Oct 2010
When this film first came out I heard a lot of good things about it, I heard many critics say that this was one of Robin William's best performaces of his carrer so right then I knew I had to see it.
After watching this film for the first time and will most likely be the last time I watch it, I have to say that this isnt your traditional old fashioned comedy this film dark, sick, twisted, heavy, and depressing all rolled into one but at the same time it's still funny just in a completly different way which is something you don't see a lot.
First let me say that the critics were right about Robin Williams's performace it really was one of the best of his carrer. His reactions and facial expressions were spot on and the chemistry he had with all the actors brought the best in them especially Daryl Sabara who played his son Kyle, when they were on the screen together they created most of the real comedy in this film and they really did convince me that they were father and son.
But the scene where Williams did his best was the scene where you find out his son is dead, you go from happy to sad in a blink of an eye and it creates one of the most powerful scenes i've ever watched.
Besides Williams they were some other chracters that I liked but none that were on his level which isnt suprising to me. The direction from Bobcat Goldthwait from great as well, he can suprise you in many ways just like the scene where Kyle dies, you don't see that coming at all the first time you watch it.
He takes some things too far but still his direction was easily some of the best of 2009. Also his script which to me was easily Oscar worthy. His jokes went a little to far at times but for the most part most of them were pretty smart and I did laugh quite a bit at them.
Robin Williams doesn't make this whole film which I did expect to happen but I think him and the director carried this film and made it as good as it was. The flaws I have with this film are that it's not for everyone, I could easily see why somebody woulden't like this film because it's dark and at times unexpecting.
Also some of the scenes were dragged for to long and sometimes the music played for so long I thought I was watching a music video. And I thought they killed off Kyle too quickly and could've shown more of him and Williams together.
So this film is well acted, written, directed. But don't be suprised at how dark and sick this film really is. A good but twisted film. 80%.
