Review of World's Greatest Dad (2009) by Daniel G — 16 Aug 2014
From writer/director Bobcat Goldthwait comes the dark satire World's Greatest Dad. When his son dies in a freak accident Lance Clayton tries to preserve his son's dignity by staging a suicide, but when the suicide note gets leaked and becomes a source of inspiration to others Clayton gets caught up in an ever increasing web of lies to prevent the truth from coming out.
Robin Williams leads the cast and gives a fairly strong performance. And, the writing does an effective job at making Clayton's situation sympathetic and showing how his good intentions turn on him.
However, the film goes a little out of its way to make Clayton's son reprehensible, and a lot of the characters are one-dimensional. Though it doesn't completely work, World's Greatest Dad explores some provocative issues in an interesting way.
