Review of World Trade Center (2006) by Jake K — 24 Apr 2011
A seriously hard movie to review. First, the faults. The subplot about the marine and being inspired by God to help out at the trade center felt forced and some of the dialogue sounded corny, with some scenes going nowhere.
Also, some of the images of the burning towers stand out too much. The positives: The performances by Cage, Pena, Bello, Gyllenhaal, and Hernandez are phenomenal, and as an audience, we feel trapped with them wherever they are, whether it is under the rubble, or in the time span in which they wait to realize their fates.
The exchanges between the officers are authentic and make you feel like they actually work for the PAPD. There is some American flag waving, like in most of Oliver Stone's movies, but not too much.
This shows that Oliver Stone can spare the controversies for a while and make a decent 3-act movie. Not the best, but could have been a lot worse.
