Working Girl (1988) -- [8.0] -- Mike Nichols (The Graduate) directs Kevin Wade's tale of a stalwart secretary trying to climb the corporate ladder in New York. "Working Girl" is a highly enjoyable comedy-drama with a screwball slant.

Melanie Griffith has never been better than she is here, and she's surrounded by spectacular supporting players. Sigourney Weaver is terrific as the boss from hell and Harrison Ford is his usual, refreshingly low-key, charming self.

No part in this film, no matter how small, gets anything less than top talent -- look for Joan Cusack, Alec Baldwin, Oliver Platt, Kevin Spacey, Philip Bosco, Olympia Dukakis, Nora Dunn, and Amy Aquino in memorable roles.

Carly Simon provides the soundtrack, including my favorite Oscar-winning Best Song of all time, "Let the River Run." The film also earned nominations for best picture and director, as well as acting nods for Griffith, Weaver, and Cusack.
