Review of Working Girl (1988) by Tasha A — 28 Aug 2008
We watched this the other night, upscaled to HD. This is one of those films that should stay firmly entrenched in your memory as a nice, fluffy feel-good movie - keep those rose-tinted spectacles on.
Watching it 20 years later (yes, I now feel even older than my knees tell me I am...), and I was left disappointed. In fact, as the credits came up, I ended up shouting at the telly - "Empowerment? You call that liberating??! She's shagged her way to the top and now has a cubicle office! That's supposed to be the highlight of her career?!".
And I was mesmerised by the scale of it - big shoulder pads, and bigger hair. You wouldn't want to put that near a naked flame! And it was great spotting all the now more famous cast members - I'd forgotten that Kevin Spacey was in it, and a blink-and-you'll-miss-it part from David Duchovny. Joan Cusack's eye makeup was even more astounding than her hair; Alec Baldwin hasn't changed at all; Harrison was very cute. But all these little bits didn't add up to the enjoyable experience I remember from my teens - watch with care!
