Review of Woodstock (1970) by Nick K — 27 Mar 2008
If you want to understand the counterculture, look no further than this film. It captures everything-- the spirituality, the political idealism, the sensuality, and of course the music. I saw this film when I was 10 years old and it I'm sure it influenced me a lot.
Actually, it would be 6 years later that I would finally enter the counterculture fully by embracing the hippie spirituality of Ram Dass and company, but throughout the trials and tribulations of being a wandering non-ascetic in the American market-place culture, these ideas have still held sway in my thinking.
Not every experiment of the 60s was a success, but the basic gist of living with a conscience for all living beings (people, animals, the earth) is still what guides me-- all you need is love. The music is nothing but an expression of this idea-- to keep expanding the circle of our love.
