Review of Woodstock (1970) by Mitchell W — 24 May 2012
It may have been a cultural landmark, but the music was wildly uneven. Virtually every set was marred by technical problems or drugs (a lot of water was spiked with LSD). But the filmmakers carve out a highly-entertaining documentary from the proceedings; even the more-dated stylistic choices retain a nostalgic charm.
The movie circumvents most of the festival's shortcomings by cherry-picking the best performances. The highlights: Sly & The Family Stone, Santana and of course, Hendrix's interpretation of "The Star-Spangled Banner.
