Review of Woodlawn (2015) by H M — 02 Nov 2015
Disclaimer- I was on the Woodlawn B team in 1973 (the prayer meeting in the movie was held at my house!) and on the varsity Football Team during the 1974 season (Banks- Woodlawn game) and on the 1975 team (not shown in the meeting)- so theoretically I was in the movie!
Lets get down to the movie- first there was artistic license taken in the movie vs. the real thing. No my house did NOT have chandeliers- it was a middle class house- however compared to some of my teammates homes (that I visited and had dinner at etc) it was a very nice home. Other small things aside- (like the fact that we never played games at the high school but at Lawson and Legion Field) it was close to the mark.
The film is well done and captures the spirit of the times as both whites and blacks struggled to make sense of this new world and to understand each other. Great acting an and inspiring back story on Tandy's life make this a great film to watch especially as Tandy has to redefine success for his life.
This is a super film for young people to watch. It may seem hard to believe that all this happened- but it did.
