Review of Won't You Be My Neighbor? (2018) by Kurt M — 14 Dec 2018
I have already said this once before this year, but I take it back.
THIS movie was the best surprise I have had in a theatre in 2018. Hands down.
This not only deserves to win Best Documentary but deserves a Best Picture nomination when the year is over.
Its rare that a movie/documentary comes along and is perfectly timed. This is such a case, where amidst the societal, culture and political turmoil we are currently living in,.
A movie with a message, regarding a man with a message, can remind us that "love is the answer to everything". I knew nothing of Fred Rogers going into this other than knowing of him but never watching his show as a kid. This documentary showcases this man as someone who's story deserves to be told though , bringing to light his contributions to childs entertainment but more importantly, mental health and well being LONG BEFORE ANY OF THESE TOPICS were a cultural norm to discuss.
There's so much more to be said about this, but I won't give it away because its truly one of , if not the best documentary I've ever watched and I implore you to give this a watch. I had the privilege of seeing a matinee of this along with about 15 other people, and at the end of the film, there was not a dry eye in the theatre.
Won't You Be My Neighbor deserves your time, money and attention.
Give this hidden gem a shot, you won't be disappointed.
