Review of Won't You Be My Neighbor? (2018) by Bryn R — 08 Aug 2018
This is what great filmmaking is all about. The ability to transcend the medium and create something not only entertaining and informative, but transformative. This documentary has quite possibly changed my life.
Is it because Fred Rogers was a huge part of my childhood? Absolutely not. I'm 56 and was halfway through my childhood when Mr. Rogers Neighbourhood first came on. In fact I can't recall if I ever say through an entire episode before.
To my detriment I might add. The only reason I watched this documentary at all is because I manage a movie theater, and it's my job to preview everything we're playing. I was expected to be bored and I was entranced and transformed.
Fred Rogers, if the many people interviewed are to be believed, was as close to a pure Christian as anyone has ever become. A sweet, loving, caring individual who never preached or judged. He lived by perfect example, touching the lives of everyone he met with sweet wisdom and grace.
He lived by a code that most Christians, I'm sorry to say, fail miserably to attain. Myself included. But I hope to do better now. I pray with all my heart that more people see this movie and realize the simple lessons this man endeavored to teach us as children can transform us into a better human race.
