Review of Won't You Be My Neighbor? (2018) by Greg C — 30 Jun 2018
WWFRD? My neighborhood never felt quite as genteel, corny, or square as that of Fred Rogers. This documentary pulls back the curtain on the TV icon, to show that he was actually largely the Mr. Rogers people know and trust.
It does lay to rest an urban myth about Mr R using sweaters to cover up old military period tattoos. It frequently amazes me how a given documentary, book, poem, museum exhibit, etc. seems to be topically current.
Let's just say that it is refreshing to be reminded of someone who did not play to the negative, the violent, or the angry least common denominator. Mr Rogers raised eyes to the arena of childhood development, overcoming doubts and torments, and seeing the intrinsic worth in people.
Mr. Rogers, I like you for you.
