Review of Won't Back Down (2012) by Jeff S — 07 Oct 2012
Viola Davis is to Won't Back Down what sunshine is to a rainy day. Only a Mother or Dad who have fought the public school system can understand the pressure, pain and hopelessness of fighting sytematic bureaucracy for your child.
Won't Back Down brought tears to my eyes, pain to my gut and joy to my heart as Nona and Jamie fought hard and lost a ton so their children and hundreds of others could have a chance for a better future.
I will cry Oscar for Viola until I see her walk off the stage with a statuette under her arm! Give VIOLA AN OSCAR!!! Viola Davis is the strength of the movie followed closely by veteran actress Maggie Gyllenhaal.
Is the movie worth the nominal fee charged by movie theater today? Yes. Most will not understand unless they have a child in the public school system or they are a teacher that genuinely cares about their children.
It is a national embarrassment on our nation when the disparity in school quality is so obvious based on zip code and race. My recommendation? Everyone should support Won't Back Down. Everyone includes the rich, poor, black, white, asian and latina parents.
We must understand that the Brown decision of 1964 is still in need of revision and an upgrade.
