Review of Wonderland (2003) by Geonard Y — 01 Oct 2006
Directed by James Cox.
Starring Val Kilmer, Kate Bosworth, Lisa Kudrow, Josh Lucas, Dylan McDermott, Tim Blake Nelson.
Maybe next to Depp and to some degree Gary Oldman, Kilmer is one of those actors whose portrayal of real characters with notorious and abject lives makes a heck of a movie. Along with Jim Morrison, probably the phallic symbol of rock, he takes on the real deal, the porn king John Holmes. During Holmes? washout years, he got involved with drugs and murder for which he was acquitted. Strong as Kilmer?s portrayal, the real star of the movie is the story, told in clashing details by those involved, and expertly directed by James Cox. There?s a drug deal scene that parallels the one seen in ?Boogie Nights,? but that one fails in comparison. This is the definitive biographical porn movie.
Best Scene: A massacre of lead pipes.
