Review of Wonder Woman (2017) by Nocturnal R — 15 Feb 2018
- I did not expect to be moved as much as I was; I think I'm letting myself get more emotionally connected to movies as I get older. Wait...isn't that what movies are supposed to do?
- The scene in the trenches is easily one of the best and most emotionally satisfying sequences in any Superhero film. Ever. I'd see the film again for that one scene.
- Gal Gadot FTW.
- The soundtrack is surprisingly good and engaging, save for the ''Wonder Woman'' theme that thankfully barely plays.
- Chris Pine's fate was kinda gutsy and awesome.
- Danny Huston blew me away the first time I saw him in The Proposition. He's been unfortunately slumming it since then. What gives?
- For a superhero film, it comes close to having a really surprising turn/denouement. It flirts with it just enough to still make it rise above many other films of the subgenre, which brings me to:
- Runner-up for best scene of the film: Diana's ''loss-of-innocence''/revelation in the third act.
- That scene where the two baddies close the door on the others with the gas, then laugh? Worst. Scene. Ever.
- Ewen Bremner sings in this. Awesomness raised another 23%.
- Don't give a rat's ass that it was directed by a woman and oh-look-how-this-is-setting-some-kind-of-precedence-or-what-have-you, it's a damn well-made and effective big-budget superhero film, which brings me to:
- Diana is likely the most engaging and likable and cheer-worthy superhero put on film since, arguably, Christopher Reeves' Superman. Possibly even more so. At least recently.
- Now I actually *want* to check out Justice League since WW will be in it.
