Review of Wonder Woman (2017) by Amir L — 26 Apr 2018
Wonder Woman (2017) is surprisingly funny, charming and way better than I had expected. The film carries beautiful messages about belief, virtue, and love. I had my doubts about Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, but upon watching the film, I was proven wrong.
The actress portrays the character with such naivety, kindness, and warmth yet still carry a sense of strength and stoicism. Patty Jenkins, the director, truly understands the heart of the iconic female superhero.
The supporting characters are fantastic, especially her allies in a quest for peace. However, the film suffers from its underwhelming and forgettable set of villains. General Ludendorff sniffing a substance that grants super-human strength feels unnecessary and utterly ridiculous, and Dr.
Poison's presence offers nothing interesting. The Ares reveal feels unearned and more confusing than surprising. The final act, overall, feels like a step back from what the film has successfully established, falling into the list of extremely CGI-heavy climactic battles.
While most of the action sequences in the film are entertaining, the visual effects often look cartoony and unpolished. However, these noticeable flaws are outweighed by the film's powerful and inspiring story.
Wonder Woman is the best DCEU film to date.
