Review of Wonder Woman (2017) by Joss R — 22 Jun 2017
Thrilling and Charming, Wonder Woman finally delivers a worthy entry into the DCEU canon with an origin story that focuses on its main lead rather than the expansion on the universe which has lead to an incoherent mess in the past.
The film immediately kicks off with our Wonder Woman who is already eager to save the world but is also very naive this leads to some comedic moments where Gal Gadot's charisma and Chris Pine's charm are shown front and centre as our female lead is portrayed as a fish out of water in a world different from hers (the real world) Gal Gadot is charming, naive and is full of the energy you'd want but her character is not a "Mary Sue" like (Force Awakens) Rey she's a flawed and multi-dimensional who's morality is really put to the test in the tear jerking final act.
Chris Pine's character is both charming and comedic throughout and his chemistry with Gal Gadot is some of the films finest moments. The film has a much lighter tone compared to the previous DCEU entries with a light hearted plot that intrigues viewers.
The rest of the cast fare well too with much of their performances standing a worthy ground along with the two main leads. The pacing is fast but sometimes slow this is noticeable in the second act but that's a minor nuisance.
Their was never a moment where I said to myself "Is it over?" The way I did in BvS. The themes of feminism are addressed in the sense that this film is female empowering but also shows equality as the men are treated as equals and not jerks next to the women.
As feminism is not "hating men" an idea some movies misunderstood. The action sequences show these themes too. But the real star, our Wonder Woman grows a lot in this movie from a naive young hero with the stars in her eyes to an understanding mature superhero who knows humanity is worth saving despite its flaws.
If there are any flaws it's the villain who barely gets screen time but then again Marvel hasn't broken that curse and who knows probably not even the new and improved DCEU. Wonder Woman is an entertaining, funny (not in the forced way), action packed adventure that's sure to reinvigorate the fallen franchise.
