Review of Wonder Woman (2017) by Stephen S — 01 Feb 2018
This movie is definitely a mixed affair for me, but it has a lot going for it.
Gal Gadot is great as Wonder Woman and the chemistry she has with Chris Pine on screen is one of the best aspects of this movie. There are some incredible action sequences and they look fantastic. There are some genuinely moving scenes in this film, and the epic action just adds to it. Humor is well done for the most part and doesn't get annoying or distract from the story. I have some issues with the World War I storyline involving Aries and some other points. The Ludendorff character was ridiculous and considering Erich Ludendorff was a real General and a major player in the war in real life made this silly cartoonish interpretation even more bothersome for me personally. The Dr. Poison character as well was just too over the top and just doesn't fit in with the serious tone and themes at least for me. I understand this is a comic book movie and not meant to be historically accurate but when dealing with such a real pivotal part of world history like the first world war, I think more care should have been taken with some of these characters. Despite the negatives, after seeing this a couple of times I feel the good outweighs the bad. The film is visually stunning at times, Gadot is just on point as Wonder Woman and the overall themes and story are solid.
