Review of Wonder Woman (2017) by Thomas B — 28 Jan 2018
**.
I'll be honest, I've really begun to tire of the comic book genre. I still love films like 'The Dark Knight' - ones that defy the limits and conventions of what we've seen before - and to a lesser extent last years 'Logan' also proved that this kind of stuff can still appeal to me. 'Wonder Woman' is not a bad movie. It's got good performances and a sense of fun that means the film is at least entertaining; even if it is way too long. But, beyond that, there's really not much here. Lots of action, lots of explosions, lots of humour - but no heart. The characters are likeable, but not investable. The story is passable, but not interesting. The villains are typically CGI heavy and boring. But I was entertained, and I've got to give the film some credit for that. In the past, I would've given this three stars, and moved on. But this genre isn't fresh anymore. It needs invigorating. And the mere fact that the lead this time is a woman doesn't make it groundbreaking. Jesus, we should be able to have a female-led film by now without it being a big deal. It's still the same old stuff - good for kids, but there's not enough here for me to give it a positive rating.
