Review of Wonder Woman (2017) by Andrew T — 06 Jun 2017
***SPOILER ALERT*********.
IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE FILM STOP READING NOW***********.
As good as the movie was, it loses the fifth star in my review for one reason:
The abruptly forced boss battle between Diana and Ares.
Ares was merely a plot point meant to underscore Diana's immortal powers. And the whole point of her character's insistence that Ares was behind WW1 only made the 'world's colliding' aspect of her story more endearing. Sure they could have teased the Ares character for future installments, but that whole forced GOTCHA moment and the subsequent battle were clumsy and forced.
The only other character we cared for as much as we do Diana, just blew himself up to save the world and the wonderful woman he loves, so the director decides to brush his blood off the screen and give us the corny boss battle between Diana and Ares? Why?
You've already proven to the audience just exactly how she's a superhero: that moment she lets her hair out and runs out into No Man's Land. That's the spine tingler. That's the moment every person in the theater cheered their hearts out. An hour later those same people were tapping their feet impatiently waiting for the film to end. They weren't cheering when Diana defeated Ares because the WOW factor was already used. At that point it was passe. Take note Hollywood: sometimes less is more.
