Review of Wonder Woman (2017) by Aka A — 25 Jun 2017
Wonder Woman is an interesting spectacle to say the least. It's obviously the best out of the DC universe (DCU), not counting the Nolan films. It's nice to have a female superhero with her own movie.
As most of the time the heroines are side characters with less screen time then they deserve. We even saw that in Wonder Woman's first appearance in: Batman V. Superman. However it's no where near perfect.
This movies leads are both capable and give good performances all across the board. Gal Gadot and Chris Pine have fantastic chemistry and work off of each other extremely well for different styles of humor and dozens of snappy one liners.
The roles didn't require much range but we have seen the DCU films fail to have leads capable of the task at hand. However, this is in large part because of the writing and directing so how does Wonder Woman hold up in this category? Ok, the director: Patty Jenkins is clearly talented but she never really shines through.
You do at times get the feeling she was giving good direction but overall she fell flat. The writers Geoff Johns, Allan Heinberg both seem to write good dialogue as that's where the writing shines but both fall to lazy tactics such as exposition.
They do have vessels for this such as a scene where Chris Pine's character (Steve) is held under the lasso of truth and is forced to tell his captors the entire plot of the film. Another scene in a war room where again he explains his plan in long drawn out detail.
Both writers are used to making tv shows Johns having only written dc superhero animated shows such as the original Teen Titans and Young Justice (two fantastic shows). Heinberg is best known for Scandal and Greys Anatomy.
He is an extremely odd choice. As not only has he too has only done tv shows but he also has never done anything superhero related, unlike Johns of course. It would have made so much more sense too have Johns and someone like Jonathan Nolan.
Who has shown both prowess in writing normal movies but superhero movies as well. Overall the writing was good, the dialogue was clearly the best part but it had two writers who didn't know how to write something over an hour long.
Cinematography and lighting was bland, not bad but bland. It did all it had to do and nothing more. It didn't make too many mistakes but Matthew Jensen is no James Laxton. The picture looked good it was saturated at first which matched both the tone and location.
When they leave the first location the color dims showing the contrast. However, it slowly gets re saturated over time. The action is phenomenal, its shot well and has some of the most glorious fight choreography ever to be put on screen.
The effects in this film are at times laughable for such a high budget but it's easy to ignore. Wonder Woman is a good movie and one well worth seeing. Especially if you have a young daughter and want to show them a film with a strong female protagonist who is good just to be good.
I had a great time watching this movie in theaters and if you can still catch it I would suggest sitting back relaxing and having a great time with: Wonder Woman.
