Wonder Woman Spoiler Free Review:
When Man of steel arrived I was one of the few who liked it. It wasn't the Superman I had expected but I saw it as a film that was showing us how he had become the Superman we all knew and loved. I saw it as a series of lessons from his personal loss to his loss of innocence that would mold him into the man who would fight for Truth and Justice. Sadly I was wrong, and we ended up getting Batman Vs Superman with an even darker Batman than ever. I thought, surely they couldn't get any worse and then there was Suicide Squad. With two solid misses and one half sucess, I was not at all interested in another dive into the fetid pool that is the DC Cinematic Universe. I had come to the view that DC/WB made great trailers and honestly should stick to the short form work. So, when the first Wonder Woman trailer dropped I was like, 'well that's a pretty trailer' and went about my merry way.
Tonight I had an opportunity to see the film at no cost to myself so I figured, ' It would at least be worth the price of admission, right?' Heck, they even paid for drinks and popcorn, what was there to lose?
Lets start From a film making perspective. The first two acts are nearly flawless. Everything from the character development to the pacing is strong and well planned. The third act, while good, has a bit of the Snyder pacing and over use of CG issues that could have been fixed easily with a bit of editing but if you've seen the other films you'll be happy to know this one is considerably toned down. (And, hint hint, this one has a much better climax. No one named Martha involved. ;) ).
The story is the origin story (with a twist of course) of who and what Wonder Woman is. Is she a woman? Yes. Is she a warrior? Yes. But who is she, what is her purpose in life? And in that, what is ours?
Wonder Woman is at its core is a story of finding ones place in a world not your own. It's not the 'fish out of water' story but more of a story about determining who you want to be in life. Do you follow the crowd and just watch out for yourself or do you stand up for something?
After seeing this film, I would have not been disappointed had I paid to see it. In fact, I kinda wish I had.
4 out of 5 stars. Good film. Will probably buy.
