After several misguided attempts at challenging the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the good folks at DC and Warner finally knock one of out of the park, albeit with the unlikeliest of characters. Making an Amazonian princess made of clay relatable to modern movie audiences sounds like an impossible task, yet director Patty Jenkins shrewdly turns the tables on us (and winning us over in the process) by centering this ball-busting adventure on WW's own struggles to relate to humanity.

Freed from the heavy-handed bloat of last year's awful 'Batman v. Superman', Gal Gadot is pure dynamite here as comicdom's most famous superheroine, conveying both grit and vulnerability with equal aplomb.

Sure, the movie suffers a little from overlength (it could stand to drop a good 20-30 minutes), and the more cynical viewers among you might find its infectious 'girl power' vibe slightly undercut by the romantic subplot involving WWI pilot Steve Rogers (Chris Pine).

Overall, though, WONDER WOMAN kindles genuine hope that DC's stable of iconic heroes can give the MCU a run for its money.
