Review of Wonder Boys (2000) by Craig T — 05 Jan 2011
Curtis Hanson lands one of his best efforts here in an under the radar hit. He leads Douglas through a fog of literary death and reincarnates a star. Douglas has rarely been better and he steals the show in every scene.
He is kind enough to let his friends play too though. Downey and Maguire are great supporting presences as they guide and inspire Douglas on his journey to find something more in life. Not only is the movie funny but it takes on some real issues too.
Having nothing left to throw at his declining writing career, Douglas plays a character who finds that he can learn from even an unlikely young student. The movie is subtly carefree and invites us to take a break from what we know and try something new, something out of our comfort zone.
Hanson does a good job of setting up the stage and having the faith to let his cast perform and I think that makes it a winner. (B).
