Review of Wonder Boys (2000) by Mark W — 04 Feb 2008
Maybe I just love these low-key, meandering comedies, but this is something speical. Laugh-out-loud funny, amazingly well-written and directed, with the best cast one could wish for. Michael Douglas, pulling off a rare gem of a performance (see also: Falling Down).
Frances McDormand, doing her best work outside the Coen brothers' films. Tobey Maguire, pre-Spiderman. Katie Holmes, before becoming a Scientology hostage-bride. Robert Downey Jr., stealing every scene he's in as the flamboyant literary agent.
The characters work perfectly together, and the sentimentality never becomes overwhelming.
