Review of Wonder Boys (2000) by Helen R — 06 Mar 2008
Initially I thought there was no way that a movie with a title this gay could possibly be any good. Then I saw the thing. Wonder Boys is the kind of movie that you can watch over and over again, Hanson has created a rich and heady world surrounding Douglas' weatherbeaten author and professor.
Nice use of women's dressing gowns on actors who appalled us all in the Jewel of the Nile. Downey Jr. lives up to his huge acting potential for once and frog-faced Tobey Maguire does not ruin the movie.
Outstanding. Nice soundtrack of Dylan and Neil Young among others and a strong anchoring performance by Douglas make this a hugely enjoyable and rewatchable film. It also manages to be that rarest of combinations both intelligent and funny.
