Review of Wonder Boys (2000) by Pat O — 17 Sep 2008
This movie is series of comical dilemmas that ultimately not explored to their full potential or logically resolved. The characters are not well written either. In one scene they can emotionally fragile, and then suddenly strong-willed.
They change to fit whatever scenario is needed, thus making them unbelieveable. The protaganist encounters several dilemmas, which are good on paper. The problem is there are so many in the space of two hopurs, that they are not explored and exploited to their maximum potential.
And there are no segues between each issue. Michael's Douglas' character simply remmembers he has to deal with this issuem and woks on that a while, and then rememebers another issue and works on that a while.
So we forget all the plot that's happening. All I can say is thank goodness for the performers. They are the real element of this movie that makes you stay until the end. Everyone plays their parts with competence, even though their characters are inconsistent, I like Maguire the most as the dark-minded writer hopeful.
It's something you've not quite seen him do before. But, apart from a fantastic original song from Bob Dylan, Wonder Boys does not have w whole lot to offer.
