Review of Wonder Boys (2000) by Vanessa P — 13 Nov 2008
Everybody brings their a game to this film. except katie holmes, but she has red cowboy boots, so that's supposed to make up for her confused acting. no offense. michael douglas reminds me of me in this movie. i'm very much his character, and have been in the past. i'm less smoking with pink bathrobe, or sleeping with someone else's partner, but still that lingering doubt about the purpose of my own existance. robert downey jr.kills it, but in spite of all the starpower, i'm most drawn to the disturbed young tobey maguire...he's holden caulfieldy, a writer who lies to give others a more pleasant view of his life.....than the reality. this movie is like a long weekend with your fucked up best friends. it pulls on you and asks forgiveness, it's gaudy and hilarious at moments, but you always know the weekend will end and you'll be staring at a reality that doesn't bend the rules, and will ask you to step up and make grown up decisions.
Who wrote this movie anyway? I should find out.....
