Review of Wonder Boys (2000) by Barnaby E — 31 Jul 2010
This is one of my favourite movies I've ever seen. The first time I saw it, I loaned it from my buddy and ended up watching it about 20 times in one weekend. I just couldn't belive how good this movie was. The story is so brilliantly funny and it's the little details that makes it so good. The acting cannot be compared to any work, eveyone is just that good and the verbal two-play of Michael Douglas & Robert Downey Jr. is an utter joy watch.
The little details about the charaters are also something that I haven't see in other films so prominently. Almost every character has some thing to depict their character; there is the cowboy boots, knapsnack, tuba and the most famously, Grady's pink bathrobe. The dialogue consists almost entirely with refrences to old classic movies and people, like Marilyn Monroe and to other movie & literature forms. James' list of famous movie suicides is a great example of this fact. Drugs also has a big part in the story and they work together to gives a couple of the films most funniest scenes.
The soundtrack has many Bob Dylan songs that fits the story very nicely, but the main theme song is somewhat perfect, "Thing Have Changed".
So, "Wonder Boys" is a great movie, with mixture of young and, well not so old, talent with a very good & funny story about a weekend in Pittsburgh.
