Review of Wonder Boys (2000) by Timo H — 05 Aug 2010
Brilliantly acted and thought out. The moments seemed to fit flawlessly into their places and the characters thrived. The meaning, and the purpose were clear and beautiful. Wonder Boys was hilarious, and heart-warming. A definately overlooked masterpiece that features award worthy performances.
Robert Downey Jr., Katie Holmes, Michael Douglas, and Tobey Maguire all did stunning jobs and made their mark in this movie. In fact, without Downey jr, Douglas and Maguire this film wouldn't have been nearly as brilliant.
Michael Douglas did a wonderful job looking worn out, being worn out. Some actors can carry their character around until the luggage and pain the character carries becomes their own. Douglas is obviously one of those actors.
Robert Downey Jr., though not the center of the movie had some scene stealling moments. It's hard to tell why until the movie is over, but you constantly have to look to see what Downey Jr. is doing. He's just that fantastic.
Tobey Maguire is really showing that he can act beyond Spiderman. Most people hear the name and connotate him with Spiderman, but I sure as hell won't be doing that anymore. He came into his own as an actor for me the day I saw this movie.
Katie Holmes and Frances McDormand were graceful and sweet. They had a certain air about them that was charmingly beautiful. They both added to the charisma and chemistry of the movie.
The direction was average, but fit in with the atmosphere of the film. The writing on the other hand was real, and funny. It was dramatic yet side-spliting. There was something about the entire production that was very alluring. You can't help yourself you are compulsivly attracted to the odd, yet delightful movie.
Overall a great achivement in the dromady catagory which has too few movies residing in it.
