Review of Wonder Boys (2000) by Minh M — 08 Aug 2010
Screenwriter for 7 out of the 8 present and future Harry Potter films released, Steve Kloves does amazing stuff with this film about writing and university life, two things I can very much relate to.
The performances are pitch perfect from top down. I've never been more impressed with Michael Douglas and Tobey Maguire. Frances McDormand is marvelous. Robert Downey Jr is as good as ever.
It's a quiet movie, with lots of absurdity that plays so believably. Great dialogue, somewhat superficial story that deepens due to the people behind it.
It's a great movie, but the problem with this type of movie is that you can't love it. It's hard to imagine anyone putting t it on their favorite movies list because it's definitely a little gem I'm glad I saw randomly on Hulu while eating lunch.
