Review of Wonder Boys (2000) by Sohrab H — 26 Jul 2011
Entertaining and engaging, this screwball-comedy-meets-thoughtful-character-study has become something of a sleeper hit since it failed twice at the box office back in 2000. A great screenplay, which unravells genially, allowing us to explore further the mindframe of Michael Douglas' delectable Tripp, combines with a wealth of top-notch performances to create a wholly satisfying movie.
In particular Tobey Maguire shines in one of his finest performances, begging the question of why he isn't more highly regarded as an actor, while Michael Douglas carries much of the film's darkly comedic charms on his scruffy back with an equally great turn.
All in all a very solid movie.
