Review of Wonder Boys (2000) by Cleve D — 08 Sep 2010
Absolutely brilliant story of a struggling writer named Grady Tripp and his relationships with his bisexual and eccentric editor, the chancellor of the university in which he teaches whom he's having an affair with, a female student who is infatuated with him, and a strikingly abnormal and extremely brooding student who wishes to become a writer and gains the attention of Grady's editor.
The genius writing and delightful performances are the heart and soul of this film. This is the best film I have ever seen Michael Douglas in and he is perfect in it. Robert Downey Jr. is a wonder to behold here with his perfect line delivery and fun portrayal of a very lively character.
Tobey Maguire is at his absolute best here in a very dark and intriguing role. This is the best film Curtis Hanson has ever made and likely will ever make. It's a beautifully and wonderfully made little film that continually has a strong impact on me.
A masterpiece.
