Review of Wonder (2017) by Andrew P — 19 Nov 2017
It was a good movie. I saw it with a bunch of kids from my class, whom I had read the book with. Like most books, the movie is never as good. I really wish they would have made Auggie's face look worse! I know there are varying degrees of Treacher-Collins, but his face described as being much worse than shown in the movie.
I think the lessons from the movie would have hit home more, had they not watered down his appearance. Instead of what was described, the kid just has a few scratches on his face. Can't believe nobody else has commented on this.
Furthermore, we noticed many changes from the book, most notably that in the book, Auggie had lost his helmet well before he started school. In no part of the book, aside from flashbacks, did Auggie wear a helmet.
I wish Hollywood would keep it real for once, but I guess Palacio was complicit in all this. Instead of a challenging film, it's a watered-down, but entertaining family movie.
