Review of Wonder (2017) by Shawn N — 12 Feb 2018
Call me a cold-hearted bastard, but I am a realistic one and like to see movies deal with situations that could happen in real life. What we have here is a great message to accept those different from us, but the delivery here is like something you'd expect to be shown at a church meet for kids.
Sugary & syrupy sweet to an unrealistic point where everything bad turns out good. Oh, if life were really this way, but it is not. All the bad people eventually realize how mean they have been and the end is so cliche. He gets a ribbon and the whole place stands cheering and all the people that were mean to him are standing & clapping. Mean kids & bullies generally turn out to be mean adults and bullies just the same.
Again, great message of acceptance here and performances are good, but too much sugar can spoil the desert and this was just too tied up with a pretty little predictable bow on top for me. The ONLY realistic thing happening here is that your pets die. Oops, sorry for the spoiler. 1 star for good intention and message, 2nd star for good performances.. I'm sure Owen & Julia were happy to get the work.
