Review of Wonder (2017) by Adam M — 06 Sep 2018
The general premise of "wildly unpopular kid figures out how to make friends and find their way in the world" was done better this year by Don't Talk To Irene. Both films were full of cliches and by-the-numbers plotting, but Irene was able to stand out with some really off-the-wall humour.
Unfortunately Wonder is just really predictable, and entirely too sappy. Everything goes so perfectly for every character to the point where it's almost a fantasy world. Not that the movie needed to bee seeped in realism, but when the problems of the characters don't seem that bad to start and they barely have to work for their happy endings, it's just a bit shallow.
There are two entirely separate standing ovations within ten minutes of each other at the end of this movie, it's that on the noise with it's sappy endings. And unfortunately this drags down a movie that really has an exceptional cast and some decent dialogue.
Owen Wilson and Julia Roberts give wonderful, heartfelt performances, and Jacob Tremblay is still an extraordinary talent. There are a lot of things to like about Wonder, and if you just want some mindless feel-good cheese, then Wonder is a pretty good way of getting it.
