The central question is how humans deal with what science is able to changes. In this case a deeply emotionally strained and damaged woman makes a flawed decision and tries to live with it. And by so doing makes everyone else deal with it.
Oedipus as a plot for science fiction without special effects, and no one regal. Though provoking, and a bit repugnant at the same time.
