Review of Woman in the Dunes (1964) by Wut S — 26 Jun 2007
Based on Kobo Abe's novel with the same title. The film beautifully captures the endless, natural metamorphosis of sand. The plot is deep and bizarre enough without resorting to extremity.
A school teacher with entomological interest visited a village built upon sand dunes, hoping to discover new species. Missing the last train, the man was offered shelter by the village. He descended down a large sandpit with a rope ladder, only to find a worn house surrounded by unclimbable mountains of sand. Inside was a woman who welcomed him, cooked for him, and made a bed for him. The man ate and then rested... without knowing that the ladder would be gone the next morning.
On top of the strong concept and visuals, the soundtrack is outstanding.
