(1964) Woman in the Dunes.
(In Japanese with English subtitles).
DRAMA/ with some suspense.
Taken from a novel written by Kobe Abe showcasing an entomologist left stranded onto a dune only to find refuge with a woman living in a cottage down a pit. The entomologist gets the royal treatmeant until the ladder that he climbed down on goes missing! This is just the beginning! The big appeal of this film are the photgraphed sliding sand which unlike Lawrence of Arabia but very close-up as if the viewer is right there feeling what the entomologist is feeling!
Like the film "Ghost World" this is a very symbolic and metaphorical film about our everyday lifestyles but is done on a different way. Described by some as a counter- culture allegory of our society!
4/4.
