Review of Woman in the Dunes (1964) by Bach P — 29 Dec 2007
The "Woman in the Dunes" is a little bit of everything. There's lust, there's sorrow, and there's a haunting plot that will send you shivers. A man is doing research near a village and is left stranded.
Several men lure him to a deep hole in the ground where he meets a mysterious but warm woman. The plot twists and turns from there, and questions of morality are tossed around like a hot potato. The film is packed with questions, ideas, symbols and statements.
It's unique in that you can interpret the film in hundreds of ways. There's so much depth to the film that it takes repeated viewings to really soak in, but it is well worth it. A quiet thriller.
