Review of Woman in the Dunes (1964) by Samuel R — 08 Jan 2008
Great! Classic, surreal, ... romantic? Existentialist more than anything, and yet somehow it's still emotional and engaging. Absolutely beautiful shooting and every detail perfect. Do we work to live or do we live to work? What is freedom, and would we even know what to do with it? Are we imprisoned by our circumstances or do we seek out our own prison and cherish it? Is there greater meaning outside the standard humdrum, or is the greatest satisfaction found within the daily routine? And then there's so much commentary about human relationships.
.. but I'd say it was touchingly romantic in some warped way, maybe that's life. Warning - given its age and artsyness, it's a little slower-paced than the latest Hollywood stuff, but the whole thing is engaging and memorable.
Sysyphus, sand, and sex. What more could you ask?
