Review of Woman in the Dunes (1964) by Robert O — 28 Jan 2008
Woman in the dunes is many things. It's an examination of the relationship between male and female. It's a surrealist take on the adaptability of man and desire to fit into society. It's a study of isolation and a rejection of textbook logic.
Obviously Teshigahara's most well-known work, Woman in the Dunes is a mesmerizing, claustrophobic film with a palpable erotic tension and a nature which lends itself to a wide array of interpretations.
Brilliance.
