Review of Woman in the Dunes (1964) by Rod A — 30 Dec 2008
If the premise sounds familiar- a battle of wills between two people in a desolate location, featuring exquisite cinamatography and creepy music- that's because "Woman in the Dunes" is, in my opinion, the Japanese equivalent of Bergman's "Persona.
" And it's just as good as that film, if not better. Instead of just exploring the conflict between man/man and man/self, it uses the conflict between man and nature to explore the other two. This is probably wrong, but I also interpreted Woman in the Dunes as a depiction of the struggle between the worker and his/her society/environment.
