Review of Woman in Gold (2015) by Kyle B — 01 Apr 2015
A solid film with a wonderful leading performance by Helen Mirren, one of her stronger performances in a while. It felt like Philomena meets The Monuments Men as a young man, Ryan Reynolds that does fine in this, takes an older woman that has lost something and must return to her home land to rescue the lost item (in this being a paining of her aunt).
It also deals with the theme of the Nazis and how they stole art during World War 2 from many Jewish people. The story is interesting and will keep you into it but it does have some moments where it dips in interests.
Flashbacks are a tricky thing with me because they often times seem so abrasive and halt the primary story yet they are needed to understand what the character has gone through. Here they were hit and miss but included some great actors that I love, Max Irons and the very well casted Tatiana Maslany that really does have a similarity to Mirren in appearance.
It just felt sometimes two movies were happening at once but overall it meets together fine. If you like seeing Mirren and you like based on true story films, this is a nice one to go see and will peak your interest to seek out the true story after the movie is over.
