Review of Woman in Gold (2015) by Amanda C — 26 Apr 2015
For such a facinating true story, The Woman in Gold lacks the originality to make the film very interesting. It hits every note a historical biopic should and is only saved from oblivion by the rock solid performances from Helen Mirren and Tatiana Maslany.
It helps that they have no competition for the screen spotlight as Ryan Reynolds gives one of the most bland performance in years. He more or less blends into the background. On the other hand, this does allow the film to focus on Mirren's Maria Altman, which is nice to see.
Most films of this type relegate the women to the background instead of acknowledging their importance. This is the one area that The Woman in Gold gets it right. This is Maria's film which is as it should be.
It's too bad the story itself isn't given the treatment it deserves.
